One thing that kept us all in line when visiting Grandma's house (who only live 3 miles away from our own home) was the "Family" block. We were given some freedom to ride our bikes, run and play but it was well understood that if we misbehaved we were going to get corrected one way or the other. There was Grandma's house, Great-Grandma Rowley who lived right next door, Aunt Louise, Aunt Della, Keith and Vivian's and Great-Grandma Holt who lived on the other side of the park. That's not even mentioning the bazillions of cousins, aunts, uncles etc. who would visit or drive by at any time. If we did something wrong it was guaranteed to get reported or we would be corrected right on the spot. There was no such thing as privacy but we also knew there was a plethora of people in a time of need and that we were always watched over and loved.

I think there's something special in that that you don't see much of now-a-days...the family block with so much family close together, and knowing you have so many you can turn to in a time of need in the many childhood adventures!
