I just discovered that problem recently with Pyzam as well. I lost everything on the side so, I decided my background could stay the way it is! Start using Cutest Blog on the Block for your backgrounds. For some reason, they work better and you won't lose anything when you change. Just follow the directions because you do have to change a setting in your html on the background page to minima. But, other than that it stays the same.
